An Unusual Phenomenon Emerges: Four Months After China Suspends Rare Earth Supplies to Japan, a Crisis Has Yet to Materialize
On May 22, international media reported that China’s exports of heavy rare earth elements and high-purity gallium to Japan have remained near zero for four consecutive months since December 2025. Despite the critical role these materials play in high-end manufacturing, Japan’s industrial chains have not yet experienced widespread disruptions. This apparent stability is largely sustained by strategic buffer stockpiles accumulated since the 2010 rare earth dispute, alongside extended corporate safety inventories. However, underlying structural pressures are rapidly intensifying. Alternative supply chains, particularly from Australia and Southeast Asia, have failed to scale effectively, while soaring spot prices and stringent export compliance requirements are severely impacting small and medium-sized manufacturers. According to industry projections and government white papers, Japan’s current reserves are expected to reach critical depletion thresholds by mid-to-late 2026.
